Wave of homophobia sweeps the Muslim world

This feature article in Der Speigel gives a summary of the increasingly dire risks faced by gay people in some Muslim countries of the Middle East. Lynchings, imprisonment and executions are becoming more common.

It looks as if a wave of homophobia has swept over the Islamic world, a place that was once widely known for its openmindedness, where homoerotic literature was written and widely read, where gender roles were not so narrowly defined, and, as in the days of ancient Greece, where men often sought the companionship of youths.

More than anything, it is the politicization of Islam that has led to the persecution of gays today. Sexual morals are no longer a private matter. They are regulated and instrumentalized by governments.

The Muslim world reminding people how much they hate those who is openly gay?

Is this news like how Jews avoid pork and Hindus can’t take beef? Must be a slow news day in Germany.

Not sure, but Greece is not part of the Islamic World, and so the assertions of open mindedness in ancient times needs to be clarified.

Its the religion + very male centered macho culture. It’s always been there.

You should read the paragraph carefully. The article didn’t say that Greece is part of the Islamic World.
